Privacy policy

We keep this simple, because privacy should be. This page explains what data we collect when you visit LAYR, why we collect it, who helps us handle it, and the rights you have over it. No dark patterns, no buried clauses — just a plain account of how we treat your information.

Who we are

LAYR (LAYR Map) is a small independent studio based in Prague, Czech Republic. We make custom 3D topographic map art of running and cycling routes.

For data protection purposes, the data controller is:

What data we collect

We only collect what we need to run the shop, fulfil your order and improve the experience. Depending on how you use the site, this can include:

  • Order information — your name, delivery address, email, the details of the piece you've configured (your chosen route or uploaded GPX file, frame colour and size) and your order history.
  • Contact information — anything you send us by email or through the Message us bubble, so we can answer you.
  • Account information — if you create an account, the details you save with it.
  • Payment information — handled by our payment provider. We never see or store your full card number (more on this below).
  • Browsing and device data — pages you visit, how you arrived, and standard technical details such as your approximate location, browser and device, collected through cookies and similar technologies.

Why we use it, and our lawful basis

Under the GDPR we need a lawful basis for everything we do with your data. Ours are:

  • To fulfil your order (performance of a contract). Processing your purchase, making your piece, arranging delivery and sending order updates.
  • To run and protect the shop (legitimate interests). Keeping the site secure and working, answering your messages, preventing fraud and understanding how the site is used so we can make it better.
  • To meet legal duties (legal obligation). For example, keeping records required by tax and accounting law.
  • For marketing and advertising cookies (consent). Analytics and advertising cookies, and any marketing emails you opt into, run only with your permission — and you can withdraw it at any time.

Who helps us handle your data (processors)

We work with carefully chosen partners to run the shop. They process data on our behalf, under agreements that require them to protect it:

  • Shopify — hosts our store and powers the checkout. We also use Shopify Email to send order emails and any newsletter you've signed up for.
  • Shopify Payments and the card networks — to take payment securely. LAYR never stores your full card number.
  • Google — Google Analytics and Google Ads, for analytics and advertising (used with your consent).
  • Meta — the Meta Pixel and Meta ads, for advertising and measurement (used with your consent).
  • Our delivery carriers — Zásilkovna and Česká Pošta, who receive the name and address needed to deliver your parcel.

Cookies

Cookies are small files that help the site function and help us understand how it's used. We use two broad kinds:

  • Necessary cookies — needed for the shop and checkout to work (for example, remembering what's in your basket). These are always on.
  • Analytics and advertising cookies — from Google and Meta, used to measure traffic and show relevant ads. These run only with your consent.

When you first visit, you can choose which optional cookies to allow, and you can change your mind at any time through the cookie settings on the site. Declining the optional ones won't stop you from browsing or ordering.

How long we keep your data

We keep your data only as long as we genuinely need it:

  • Order and tax records are kept for the period required by Czech accounting and tax law.
  • Account data is kept while your account is open; close it and we'll remove it (other than anything we must retain by law).
  • Marketing consent is kept until you withdraw it or unsubscribe.
  • Analytics and advertising data is kept according to the retention settings of Google and Meta.

When we no longer need your data, we delete or anonymise it.

International transfers

We're based in the EU, and we prefer to keep data within it. Some of our partners — such as Google and Meta — may process data outside the European Economic Area. Where that happens, transfers are protected by safeguards recognised under the GDPR, such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, so your data keeps the same protection it has here.

Your rights

The GDPR gives you strong rights over your personal data. You can ask us to:

  • Access the data we hold about you, and get a copy.
  • Correct anything that's inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Erase your data, where we no longer have a reason to keep it.
  • Restrict how we use it while a question is being resolved.
  • Object to processing based on our legitimate interests, including direct marketing.
  • Port your data — receive it in a portable format, or have it sent elsewhere.
  • Withdraw consent at any time, for anything you've consented to (such as marketing or advertising cookies). This won't affect anything we did before you withdrew it.

To exercise any of these, just email info@layrmap.com. We'll respond as quickly as we can, and within the time the law allows.

Complaints

We'd always rather hear from you first, so we can put things right. But you also have the right to complain to the Czech data protection authority:

Changes to this policy

As LAYR grows, we may update this policy. When we make a meaningful change, we'll post the new version here. The latest version is always the one on this page.
